This was a fascinating read。 True I love books of this sort and have read many but never get bored of it。 I really liked the set up of this one; we start closer to home and on a relatively small scale and as we progress through the book we get further away from our little planet and it all becomes much larger in scale， a nice way to make your way through the mysteries of the universe。 I thought I might know a lot of this stuff already， particularly in the early chapters but there were still some This was a fascinating read。 True I love books of this sort and have read many but never get bored of it。 I really liked the set up of this one; we start closer to home and on a relatively small scale and as we progress through the book we get further away from our little planet and it all becomes much larger in scale， a nice way to make your way through the mysteries of the universe。 I thought I might know a lot of this stuff already， particularly in the early chapters but there were still some really interesting facts that were new to me， so even if you have read books like this before don’t let it stop you adding this one to your list/library。We discover on our journey much about the universe and its science and history too。 A really good overview of everything。 As you might imagine there is a lot of information packed in so I didn’t race through it。 Taking bite sized chunks at a time is a good idea I found。 A lot of this is accessible to the average layman but that’s not to say it doesn’t get complicated at times， and I struggled here and there as there is a lot to take in。 Thankfully there is no long winded waffling or complicated jargon here， just plain speaking which is really helpful。Overall a fascinating read that is very comprehensive/all encompassing！ A good book but not something I want to read cover to cover without a break as there is a lot in it （the entire universe in fact LOL）I won’t remember all I have read and already I am thinking I would like to re-read this at some point。A solid 5*/5， I can’t really fault it - if you want to find out about the universe read this。 。。。more

This is an excellent little book （all 229 pages of it） that sets out do exactly what it says on the cover - explain the Universe in "bite-sized chunks"。 I've had this as bedtime reading for a while taking chunks each night and then falling asleep pondering the wonder of the place and the significance of the self in relation to it。 Starting locally with our own rock the author zooms outwards。 There is a fascinating historical perspective which reveals levels of scientific understanding and questi This is an excellent little book （all 229 pages of it） that sets out do exactly what it says on the cover - explain the Universe in "bite-sized chunks"。 I've had this as bedtime reading for a while taking chunks each night and then falling asleep pondering the wonder of the place and the significance of the self in relation to it。 Starting locally with our own rock the author zooms outwards。 There is a fascinating historical perspective which reveals levels of scientific understanding and questioning going back further than I had realised。 It is fascinating how humanity has so often been dominated by the powerful and ignorant whose power has always rested on maintaining ignorance。 Not only does science seek to explain and understand the Universe in which we find ourselves， but， as this book demonstrates （although this is outside the authors remit） it also has an emancipatory impact on us。 It is one oif those books which also makes you wonder at the smallmindedness and pettiness of much of humanity and human history。 There is all that out there， why do people have nothing better to do than knife each other， drop bombs on people and watch inane "talent" shows？ Anyway， I digress slightly。 The author is very good at using understandable examples and comparisons to help the uninitiated to get to grips with what are after all otherworldly and very complex ideas and facts。 While not a fan of jewelry understanding how precious metals are a product of supernovas and the collisions of neutron stars makes me more appreciative of such trinkets！ The ability of colliding extreme impact sound waves to mold the shape of a body of rock is enough to inspire any extreme sound engineer。 Towards the end of the book as the Universe as an entity is considered， its beginning， and possible end （or not） seems to offer a place where science and philosophy， and even science fiction， can meet and help stretch yet further the boundaries of knowledge and our search for answers to life， the Universe and everything which is surely something we should all be able to embrace （even if only as， like myself， as scientifically illiterate readers who thirst for knowledge and understanding from those doing the hard work）。 。。。more
